Established in 1088, the Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna is the oldest university in the western world. With a current community of more than 85,000 students, the university is among the largest in Italy. It is the first Italian university for funds received within the Erasmus + program and the second in terms of funds received by the European Commission from the intervention of the Horizon2020 research and innovation program. The University of Bologna is among the top 5 Italian universities in the main international rankings (QS, Shanghai, Times Higher Education, Censis Guide and the Sole 24Ore rankings). University of Bologna was a forerunner in developing the UNICORE project together with UNHCR and welcomed the first 5 refugee students in 2019.
