The University of Catania, founded in 1434, is a public university with several excellences in Education and Research. Synergies and collaborations are in place with many research institutes and various enterprises both at the local and international level. The keywords of our strategic vision are: Participation, Responsibility, Simplification and Transparency in a context of sustainability at the environment and social level, being a socially responsible University connecting local and global needs.
In figures: UNICT has 1250 academic staff, 1100 administrative staff and 40 000 students. It is organized in 17 Departments.
Main fields of research are: Health demographic change and well-being; European Bioeconomy Challenges: agro-food security, sustainable agriculture and Forestry, Marine and Maritime and Inland water research; Secure Clean and Efficient Energy; Smart green and integrated transport; Climate Action, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials; Europe in a changing world, inclusive, innovative and reflective societies; Space and astronomy; Secure societies – protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens; Restoring, preserving, valuing and managing the European Cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) creativity; Digital Agenda.
Since 2020 the University of Catania is part of a European University Alliance with the project EUNICE funded by the European Commission under which a European University is established with 6 university partners among Europe. The project has a focus on multilingualism and multiculturalism but its main objective are the connections between education and innovation, society and industry in order to tailor the educational offer with the society and business needs.
